The ice roads are all in,Start at ministry landing, over Treaty, jump over Mud Portage through Rocky Narrows, down East side of Scotty's,over Strawberry Portage. The road heads to the N.W. corner of Queer, follow Queer all way around to the east side , about the middle of Queer is were you turn left[doen't take the first branch road as this one goes to Pipestone and Andrew bays] The road archs and heads straight to the group of camps on East Allie passing Mac island. My road goes over Portage, you guys turn left and your HOME.I plowed you out today, will work something out with Leonard ? Like I said we paid Sharon [cell # 467 7684] $225.00 Instead of paying me it would be best to pay her.

Wheew....Made It Through Another One !!!

Here's hoping you've all had a wonderful Christmas Holiday these past few days and looking forward to the upcoming NEW YEAR........Jan, Angela (Just Back from Thailand) & I can hardly wait to get out on the lake and enjoy this special time of year.
Gotta Go ......and make up for missing out on those Boxing Day Sales ...(was just to sick to move off the couch yesterday).....Looking at getting a New Generator, "Santa-Baby" is tired of watching me start the old one for Margaritas and has provided the "Means" to procure a brand new one. Maybe ,I'll look up Frank and see where he got his ???

Hi.
Not sure what Leonard is Doing as far as plowing?? Was flying the other day and road goes over 12 mile. We may be back to plan "A" ?? I plowed over to your places today through the long skinny bay, just in and out to check conditions.
[found 2 deer carcasses that the wolves took down] Peter has 9" of ice in front of dock. Bob has 12" in front of dock. The ice in middle of channel is 15"
thick.Guy if you want i can plow over the portage on that side and to your dock ?? For now they are using the ministry landing and going over Treaty Isl.
Conditions have improved, today was awesome , clear, calm, -3.5c . I will plow out your drive ways [docks] this week end. Or sooner if your coming down?
Bob let me know how much pipe you bought and i will subtract this from your order. The pick up point is:
Brunswicksteel
125 Bismark St.
wpg. mb.
224 1472
All orders will be billed seperate in each of your names, i will give you the total weight and cost when ready for pick up.Any problems the salesperson is Peter Friesen

north west angle

The north west angle is 50 km from our part of the lake, and the water is very shallow there also. but the info on ice thickest safety was great. last year we ever really had that much ice, maybe 18" at the most. soooo with this great warm weather this road out to our place could be a while yet??? but we are enjoying this while it lasts ,,, it must be wonderful with this weather at the lake ,,, pt

Speaking of ice conditions, I stumbled upon these guys:

http://www.sportsmanslodgelow.com/fishing-reports.htm

Looks like they're close to the North West angle, but they are blogging the ice/fishing conditions they come across pretty regularly.

Also note - I've added the official Environment Canada weather report for Kenora on the right hand side. Click there to get the offical stuff.

try again peters first post

thanks jacksons'
for the update on the ice conditions, and the ice roads, looking forward to being up there, and getting started on some projects. if we get a good road and nice weather, it would be great to work on the ice to complete the all the wood on the deck. and get more material there when needed. looking forward to seeing the old place.

Ice Update

This is our first blog. Hopefully we did it right. Rick went to town yesterday in Tracker. He only had one bad pressure ridge to go around. Someone has started plowing in Holstrom's Marsh. Not sure who. We had a dusting of snow the other day and the lake is now snow covered. We still need more cold weather to make more ice. On the weekends you can really hear the snowmachines by 12 mile.
Season's Greetings to all!

Monday, December 18, 2006

Well we got three people signed up so far to contribute to the blog with invites sent out to about a dozen others. Should be very exciting.

Looks like alot of people are getting on board with the Queer Isl. ice road. I'm looking forward to the possibility of having an ice road right to our dock after three straight years of slush have put us on snowmobiles only. Can't wait for it to go in.

Rick sent an email recently saying he quaded into town again this past weekend and only encountered three pressure ridges with none too frightening.

There's talk of possibly getting up there for New Year's Eve. That would definately get the new year off to a great start. However, with a high of 0 predicted again by this Friday, I won't get my hopes up.

Peter's first entry

This is Peter's first stab at writing a blog entry.

Friday, December 15, 2006

In the beginning . . .

So I heard that there are people who live year-round in one of my favourite places in the world, the Lake of the Woods (LOW). They have been kind enough to send e-mail updates regarding things such as the formation of ice on the lake, their travels to town (example below), wildlife etc.

As I am currently removed from one of my favourite places in the world, I read these with great interest. Which got me thinking . . . there must be lots of people in the same situation.

So I thought I would start this blog so that the people who are in the area, initially those in the French Narrows area, could have a central place to deposit their stories, pictures, etc. for all who are interested to see but without the need for lenghty email forwards.

Here's an example of one such email entry:

Lake has gone for "shit" was flying yesterday and there are pressure ridges everywhere. Wednesday we were heading to French Portage for lunch and hit one, doing 60 kms. in little tracker, didn't see it became airborne and Debbie's head cracked windshield.

Sharron has taken over the Queer isl. ice road. She phoned yesterday to say Leonard Boucha will be plowing the ice road through French Narrows this year and not across 12 mile as years
past. They are asking $225.00 per camp owner. The road will start at Skeads landing on Reserve [passable in a front wheel drive car] . East side Scott'y isl over Strawberry , around Queer, branching at Andrew bay and coming towards our places. The road i plowed from 12 mile to our
place cost me over gallons of gas alone not counting all my breakdowns and repairs. We are going to town today and will pay.
If we can hold off the snow and get some cold weather the cracks should heal over and it will be good travelling again.
